Varona Benton Obituary

Varona Evelyn Benton (née Farabee) was born on October 15th, 1947, in Wichita Falls, Texas.  She spent her formative years in Norman, Oklahoma, developing a love of life, creativity, and all things beautiful.  Life’s path later led her to Littleton, Colorado, where she dedicated herself to helping others appreciate the profound beauty of their surroundings. She passed peacefully in her sleep on February 15th, 2026, departing this world upheld by the love she so freely gave.

A graduate of the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Art Education, Varona devoted over 25 years of her life to teaching art at the middle and high school levels. She was adored by many - especially her students - not only for her talent and passion, but also for her kindness, encouragement, and unwavering belief in each of them. A testament to the lasting impact she had on their lives, many former students maintained deep friendships with her long after graduation.  In 2006, upon her retirement, she was honored as Teacher of the Year.

An artist and poet at heart, Varona found deep joy in creative expression. She explored the world, often returning to the places that inspired her art and spirit. However, she most often returned to Paris and Carmel-by-the-Sea time and time again.

Through her Way of Mastery community, Varona shone as an embodiment of compassion, generosity, and love. She moved through life grounded in a deep and meaningful spiritual practice.  Anyone who knew Varona knew her as light and love—gentle, giving, and endlessly kind. She had a rare gift for making others feel truly seen and cherished.

She is survived by her daughter, Kelly Rulon (husband Harold Rulon), and her beloved granddaughter, Bella Rulon; her son, Jake Benton (wife Marissa Loya); her sister, Lynan Walsh; her nephews, Blake Walsh and Trent Walsh; and her niece, Bailey Jo Walsh.

Varona will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know her. Her legacy of creativity, kindness, and love lives on in her family, her students, and the many lives she touched.

A celebration of Varona’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 29 at Drinkwine Family Mortuary.

Please RSVP to Kelly Rulon at 303-725-7129 if you plan to attend.
